Serving people in need is always one of the objectives of the Buddy Scheme. It has been the second year for our students to serve the elderly in our neighborhood.
On 21st February, a group of Buddy Scheme members went to the Salvation Army Tai Po Multi-Service Center for Senior Citizens to show their care to the elderly. With the help of the student social workers from the University of Hong Kong, the students were provided with a series of training sessions before their visit to the elderly center. During the training sessions, they showed their proactiveness and passion in learning knowledge and skills to organize different activities.
The theme of our visit is Healthy Lifestyle. In the first part of the visit, our students introduced the Food Pyramid to the elderly promoting the importance of healthy diet. After that, they patiently led the elderly to do exercise with the use of a towel. After doing the exercise, they taught the elderly to fold the towel into a bear! It was an innovative idea! Look at the photos. Their smiles are so genuine and shiny!
The whole visit was full of laughter and love. I enjoyed it very much.

The volunteer program was really meaningful to me. I learnt to communicate with others, especially the elderly. The purpose of the program is to let students acknowledge the importance of taking care of each other.
During the visit, we played some games with the elderly, such as the ‘Food Pyramid’, ‘Big TV’, and “Teddy Bear Making Workshop”, etc. I developed better communication skills through organizing the activities. The elderly were very happy and satisfied as our teammates were devoted to serving them.
I particularly appreciate one of our mentees who could create a very harmonious and humorous atmosphere. All of the elderly were engaged in the games because of him. Although some of the elderly could not always follow our instructions closely, our mentees were more than willing to give them a hand.
I am so looking forward to the upcoming Buddy Scheme activities.
