On 14 January, I, on behalf of the school, attended an Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) event which was organized by Tai Po Youth Network. The first session of the event was an introductory session conducted by a Deputy Regional Officer. She explained the structure of the ICAC with us and clarified some misunderstandings among the public by showing us some interesting videos which allowed me to analyse some of the corruption cases in Hong Kong. We were invited to visit the exhibition area in the second session. Through the exhibition, I understood that the corruption in Hong Kong before the establishment of the ICAC was very serious. For example, the general public had to pay some money for get standard government services.
The visit was really amazing. I used to think ICAC was a mysterious team which fought against corruption. Now, I know it is a transparent team which also focuses a lot on educational activities, like drama shows and online quizzes. I learnt more about the political development and systems which are relevant to the Hong Kong Today module in Liberal Studies. The authentic learning experience provoked my interest to explore more in the socio-political issues in the subject. Lastly, as Hong Kong citizens, we all should have the shared civic responsibility of reporting any corruption cases to the ICAC.
It was, indeed, a truly unique learning experience.
