If you said that I could join a Radio Show on RTHK 5 years ago, I would not even dare to envision it. On the 28th May 2021, I joined the Teen Times Radio Show “Common Room” by RTHK with my dear friends Doris, Eddie and Savio. When Mr. Cheng mentioned this opportunity to go on a radio show to the class, we immediately jumped at the opportunity to sign up for it.
We had so many different topics we wanted to discuss, varying from music to the education system in Hong Kong. We compromised and opted to go for “The role of music in teenagers’ lives”.
Surprisingly, I was feeling more nervous before the show than I had expected. Perhaps it was because my subconscious mind knew that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience so I needed to make the most of the whole experience. The closer the show was, the more nervous I was, which was not conducive to having a good discussion. I guess this is how celebrities feel?
Luckily, Ms Alyson Hau, the show host, was remarkably experienced at making us feel at ease. She guided us to speak freely so it was a really exciting discussion and everyone had their chance to say something. I told myself to go with the flow and not to think too much about what I was going to say.
I do not want to sound conceited, but I was really impressed with ourselves after the show! Owing to Ms Hau, there was not a moment of deadly silence. The best takeaway from this was that I really have to learn to go with the flow, not to overthink and relax more.
As an English language learner, this has enlightened me to improve my English speaking fluency and the way I organise my ideas. English is my second language and I sometimes struggle with forming complex sentences while speaking simultaneously. It is easier to write in English because you can change the structure at your own pace, but people receive your message as soon as you speak. In order to avoid misconfusion, it is crucial to sharpen my organisation skills.
On a scale of 1-10, in terms of recommending you to join this radio show or similar opportunities in the future, it’s definitely a 10! It is a rare opportunity and you should seize it!
