LTPSS usually celebrates the Spanish Week in October coinciding with the National Day in Spain, as well as Hispanic or Race Day (depending on the country) celebrated in Latin America. However, due to the pandemic it was re-scheduled to December with the resumption of the school’s full-time schedule.
Therefore, from the 13th to the 20th of December, LTPSS students enjoyed different events and activities related to different cultural aspects of Hipanic culture. The Spanish Department organized workshops, performances, video projections both in class and beyond, to give students the opportunity to reflect on the richness of Hispanic cultural diversity, and on what it means to live in a global world where 21 countries have Spanish as its official language.
TUESDAY – 13th December
On Tuesday, our school brought Hispanic culture in taste, colours, and sounds to transform the school into a wonderful Spanish-speaking venue. A series of activities took place:
- We received the students with a Football performance (to pay tribute to the World Cup) and all the flags of the Spanish speaking countries. The Spanish team, teachers and students got involved creating a very nice and colourful environment where students had to conduct a penalty shoot in order to welcome them to school.
- During recess times, Clown Mila from Argentina arranged juggling and air bubbles workshops for the students at the playground.
- In the afternoon’s hall session there was a music concert and performance by the best Latin music band in Hong Kong: Azúcar Latina, which offered a concert for our S1 students. Their performance of Latin American music hits like “Despacito” invited the audience to dance to well known Latin rhythms.
We were very happy witnessing, not only our students’ joy, but also their attitude and cooperation, since they got very actively involved in the event by dancing, waving all Spanish speaking countries flags and enlivening all students’ groups.
WEDNESDAY- 14th December
On Wednesday, the students enjoyed the following event:
- Spanish Food Cooking Workshop. The Spanish senior students prepared some traditional Spanish dishes with the Spanish teachers. They cooked paella (seafood rice), gazpacho de melón (cold melon soup), tortilla de patatas (potatoes omelette), pimientos del piquillo (bell pepper stuffed with shrimps) and typical Spanish appetizers (olives, mussels, anchovies, ham, chorizo and cheese). After they finished, teachers were invited to taste the food the students prepared.
THURSDAY- 15th December
On Thursday, the students enjoyed these events:
- Spanish short film screening. Our students watched an Ecuadorian short film “PICCHU” at the Spanish room.
- World Cup Highlights in Spanish: Our students watched World cup highlights in Spanish at the Spanish room.
FRIDAY- 16th December
On Friday, the students enjoyed these events:
Hispanic Science inventions film screening: Our students watched a documentary short film about Hispanic science inventions at the Spanish room.
TUESDAY- 20th December
Teachers vs. Students Football match. Originally scheduled for Friday the 9th, the match had to be postponed to this day due to the rain. Our Spanish Team students organized a Teachers VS Students football match. Teachers team wore Spanish speaking countries t-shirts (both club and national teams). Many students joined to play and support their schoolmates. The final result was 5-3 for the Teachers team.
We thank all our students, especially our Spanish team, teachers, janitors and guests who visited our school for their participation and cooperation in the different activities. Our Spanish department has shared with our students part of Hispanic culture in order to keep them motivated to keep learning Spanish.
