Spanish Week is always one of the biggest events of the year in LTPSS. In Spain, Hispanic Day is celebrated in October, the time we usually have our Spanish Week at school. This year the events were deliberately postponed to December so that everyone could enjoy a whole week full of amazing activities, thanks to the resumption of the full time schedule.
Students were immersed in the richness of Spanish culture joining various activities held by the Spanish Department. This also broadened their horizons as Spanish is the official language in 21 countries.
TUESDAY – A Spanish Campus!
We kick-started our Spanish Week with Hispanic culture in taste, colours and sounds, transforming the campus into a wonderful Spanish-speaking venue.
On Tuesday morning, we welcomed students and teachers with a Mexican-Spanish performance, together with all the flags of the Spanish speaking countries at the school gate. Everything already felt very Spanish!
During recess, Clown Mila from Argentina made two workshops involving juggling and air bubbles.
Music performance:The best Latin band in Hong Kong “Azúcar Latina” offered a concert for the S1 students. Their mesmerising performance of Latin American music hits like “Suavemente” or “Despacito” invited the audience to dance to well known Hispanic rhythms.
Mexican Piñata: Following the Mexican tradition to strike a Piñata at celebrations, students had the chance to hit a Piñata to commemorate the end of the half-day timetable.
WEDNESDAY – Cross-Subject Activities!
Science in Spanish: The students enjoyed a workshop in the Spanish room. Ms. Pascual and Mr. Arriaga shared the inventions created by Spanish people as the Submarine, the disposable syringe or the chupa chups.
Spanish Food Cooking Workshop: The Spanish senior students prepared some traditional Spanish dishes with the Spanish teachers. They cooked paella (seafood rice), gazpacho de melón (cold melon soup), tortilla de patatas (potatoes omelette), pimientos del piquillo (bell pepper stuffed with shrimps) and typical Spanish appetizers (olives, mussels, anchovies, ham, chorizo and cheese). They then invited their teachers to taste their food.
THURSDAY – Game, Film & Dance!
Hispanic Culture Kahoot: The Spanish teachers conducted a live broadcast session with the Campus Media Team – the whole school played a Kahoot game during Class Affairs time. Questions about the Hispanic Culture were asked and the best 3 players received amazing prizes.
Spanish Short Film Appreciation: The students watched an award-winning short film, Cuerdas, which centres on the friendship between two special children. It also touches on values and hopes.
Latin Dance Workshop: The Spanish teacher Mr. Arriaga and English teacher Ms. Chow conducted a simple and fun Latin style dance workshop in the hall.
FRIDAY – Workshop & Football Match!
México Workshop: Mr. Hamilton shared with the students some fun facts about Mexico as he was living there for 11 years working as a teacher.
Teachers-Students Football Match: The students´ association Estrella organized a match, where the teachers wore the official t-shirts of the Spanish speaking countries’ National teams. Many students joined to play and support their schoolmates and teachers. The final result was 5-5.
Hispanic Culture Video Time: In the Class Affairs Time, students watched some videos about the Hispanic culture related to Spanish celebrations, gastronomy or sports. The idea of that was to share some relevant information and facts about the Spanish speaking countries.
We thank all the students, the students´ association Estrella, teachers, janitors and the guests who visited our school for their participation and involvement in the different activities. The Spanish teachers were glad to share part of their culture with everyone at school and motivated students to continue learning Spanish.
