Mothers are some of the most selfless unsung heroes around the world, who sacrificed immensely and unconditionally for the well-being of their children. Thus, our love, care and gratitude towards our mum should not be shown only on one single day in a year.
At the same time, while we are able to express our love and thankfulness towards our mother in different ways freely, there are many children around the world, who are not able to read or write, especially in developing countries. These children from poor families, especially girls, do not have many choices for their future. Since they cannot read or write, their career choices are limited to physically demanding work or forced to become sex workers, living a dangerous life with no dignity.
However, through education, their life can be changed and they will have more much wider range of jobs to choose from. This impact their life, their family and also the generations that follow. Room to Read is one of the organizations that are dedicated to provide education for these children in developing countries. By HK$2,400 a child can receive education for one whole year.
Class 2S and 2A are holding our school’s 4th fund-raising activity for Room to Read. The two classes are setting counter at lunch to sell self-made plants and self-made cards from 17th May (Wednesday) to 24th May (Wednesday) to raise fund for Room to Read. Our target this school year is to raise HK$60,000 to send 25 girls to school.
On behalf of the class teachers of 2S — Ms. Helen Chu & Ms. Grace Chang, class teachers of 2A — Ms. Zena Yeung & Ms. Mariona Anglada Escude, and Service Learning Committee, I sincerely invite you to come and support our students at their lunch-time counter. Your support means a lot to not only the children who will be benefited through Room to Read’s Literacy Programme, but also our students.
Besides the charity sale, we also have display boards next to the counter about domestic workers in Hong Kong. While many mothers in Hong Kong received gifts and flowers, were taken to nice meals and got extra love on Mother’s Day, there is a group of mothers — domestic helpers, who do not get to see their kids and families for months. These mothers chose to stay miles away home for a better future of their children. There is a recent documentary named “The Helper”, which had its premier on Mother’s Day. The documentary is about the sacrifice and contributions made by migrant domestic helpers in Hong Kong. It provides a glimpse of the importance of domestic helpers to Hong Kong and the reasons behind their huge sacrifice. You may find out more from the following links : https://helperdocumentary.co m/
Our students have spent much time and effort in preparing the above. We look eagerly forward to seeing you and hope you get something nice from our counter to express your love to your mom while making unimaginable impact on others’ life. Thank you.
