On 29th March, the English Department organised an experiential learning trip for all S4 students for them to learn first hand communication and presentation skills. Everyone in the form then presented their ideas in a showcase on 19th April. Some of our students’ takeaways from the experience are as follows:

During the trip, my attention was also drawn to The Letter Project, which aimed to encourage a meaningful dialogue between individuals with various backgrounds and viewpoints. It was a unique way for participants to express their thoughts, dreams, and desires. Participants were able to create understanding and closer ties with themselves and their loved ones through this project, which would result in a more alive and connected community. The small and adorable cabins where people write their letters made the concept even sweeter. It was wonderful to read other visitors’ letters full of encouraging messages addressed to everyone in the city.
Going to M+ was an unforgettable experience. It taught us to slow down and appreciate the little things in life, and to remember to take time to appreciate the beauty all around us. Whether we are looking at a painting, a sculpture or a poster, we should take the time to reflect on the creative genius of the artist and the emotions and feelings that are conveyed through the artwork.

M+ features a lot of exhibitions and programs on archaic textures and urbanism, exploring the built environment and its impact on society. A work that left an impression on me the most was the letter-writing project. I loved how visitors got to choose if we wanted to kneel, sit or stand while writing the letter. We could choose to mail it or stick it on the wall for everyone to read. The main message behind this project was for people to leave messages that could not be expressed in person to our loved ones, which made me tear up a bit whilst writing my letter.

My favourite part of the trip was exploring different galleries filled with artwork of different artists. I’m an art student so this was also a good opportunity to learn more about art and think of every meaning behind the artwork. I had been to many exhibitions before but this one was the biggest and most interesting one. The galleries were absolutely gorgeous. I also went to one of the most popular exhibits, something that I’d never seen before. It’s a beautiful box in which visitors were invited to write a letter to anyone they liked – they could choose to mail it or keep it themselves. I wrote one and kept it.

My favourite thing about this trip was the Siggs Collections because it made me think a lot about how one single event could change many people’s lives. Through this trip, I learnt a lot about art, which can be in any form. It does not have to only be visual — it can be sound or kinetic. One of the pieces in East Galleries produced different interesting sounds when visitors touched it. Another exhibit invited visitors to watch objects fall while listening to sentences that I found difficult to decipher. My friends and I all tried it and in the end, we all agreed that the voices seemed to be distorted. Paintings, models, photography… everything is in different forms, but guess what? They are all considered art and every one of them tells its own story, different and unique.
