Job-tasting programme at HKTDC (5th July – 6th July 2017)
This summer, I took part in a two days job internship programme with my friends. This programme was held by the HKTDC, a non-government organization. We visited their SME centre in Wan Chai, their factory in Tseung Kwan O, and their call centre in Central.
On the first day, we went to the SME centre which located inside the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. We spent the whole day in this centre. The first section of this programme is a brief introduction about how HKTDC work and how they co-operate with small or meddle-size enterprises. Before this introduction, I had no idea what HKTDC was until joined this programme. After this job-tasting programme, I realized that those large scale events in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre or Asia-world Expo are large events are actually organised by the HKTDC. Not only do they collect the information from exhibitors and arrange booths but they also design exhibition areas. Since they will also offer materials for simple both constructions, they have a factory in Tseung Kwan O.
As volunteers, our first job was to tidy up books in the small library of HKTDC. I am sure you would never know that they have a library until you are there. The books are mainly about the information of the exhibitors of each exhibition, contacts of factories all around the world, and the product magazines. They have a special section for ‘One Belt One Road’ – the main part of this centre. Visitors can read these books free-of-charge. This centre helps small or middle-size enterprises to develop.
On the second day, we visited their factory and Call Centre. There were lots of materials for setting up booths. Some could be reused for future exhibitions. The materials of those small booths in the exhibition halls were all from here. Workers helped to calculate and transport the materials to exhibition halls. They needed to build and finish everything within one night, and tidy up each booth within one night. As for the Call Centre, it was set up to help answer questions about exhibitions or concerns raised by small or middle-size enterprises.
Although the whole experience lasted for two days only, it was an definitely an inspiring one. If I start a business one day, I will come back to this super useful centre. In addition, I learnt from their employees that teamwork is very important. Without teamwork, they can never finish everything on time. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I would regret if I had not joined.
