This year, LTPSS only had one entrant for the Hong Kong Stories’ Student Story Slam, but it was a good one. 4R Sam Lee took first place at the annual storytelling competition held at the end of May with his true, first-person story, A Great Honour.
The theme of the competition was Silver Linings and Sam wowed the crowd with a story about a trip to visit his Korean grandfather that seemed to be going very badly until his grandfather surprised Sam with a very unusual gift.
If you want to hear the story yourself, you can. Just check out the Hong Kong Stories podcast. You can find the link on the Hong Kong Stories website (http://www.hongkongstories.com/student-story-slam).
To support Sam, several of his classmates attended the competition as audience members. 4M Sadie Gardiner mentioned that she loved listening to the competitors, but also enjoyed the interactive parts of the show where the audience got to create short stories on the spot.
Others were inspired to get involved next year. 4S Zainab Daima said, “It’s very fun and inspiring to hear other people’s stories. It makes me want to write a story as well.”
Sam encourages everyone to get involved if they have time. “It’s a great opportunity to practice storytelling and receive solid, tangible feedback for it, even if you don’t get into the finals.”
