Many people love Hong Kong because of its convenience, but what does a convenient life bring to us? Our landfills will be full in one or two years but we have done very little to reduce our waste especially those made of plastics. We all know that plastics are non-biodegradable. They will not decompose until 400 something years later. So, what are we waiting for? Definitely not living in trash.
Last Saturday and Sunday our S4 Food Media students were promoting plastic free living in the School of Everyday Life with two game booths.
They created a unique “Bird Ludo” (雀鳥飛行棋) by using bird models, an old picture frame, some fabric and additional checkpoints on the route. While having fun, participants were learning the irreversible impact of plastic pollution on our planet.
The other game called “10s Grab and Go” (極速走塑包袱) aims to turn an idea which everyone knows into action. Each participant was given 10 seconds to pack their bag based on the scenario they picked, for example, “getting ready for hiking”. Then our students would see what they took and provide suggestions accordingly based on the big idea of “no single use of plastics”.
After playing the game, most of the visitors realised that reducing the use of plastics is not as difficult as they had thought. Many visitors, volunteers in the market and even staff from WWF gave our students the thumbs up for being so creative and helpful.
Apart from holding the booths, our students also went to workshops learning how to coat fabric with bees wax, bind notebooks with recycled paper and make their own toothpaste. It was no doubt a fruitful weekend for the Food Media team. Well done everyone!
