Congratulations to Sam Yip, our S6 graduate, who has recently become one of the twenty awardees to receive a $40000 scholarship from the Law’s Charitable Foundation! The Law’s Charitable Foundation Scholarships, which were founded in 1987, are awarded to outstanding Hong Kong students who have decided to study in universities in Taiwan and Mainland China. This year, Sam Yip, who has been admitted to the undergraduate course (Art and Design) of National Taipei Education Universitiy through Individual Application Scheme, has become one of the awardees!
In order to help him settle down and at the same time help our fellow students gather more information and understand the environment of Taiwan universities for career and life planning, Mr. Siu Kam Kuen, Sam’s Visual Art teacher, represented the school to accompany Sam to start his university life in Taipei.
One the first day, Sam and Mr. Siu arrived Taipei in the afternoon. They went straight to the dormitory to prepare Sam’s first night in Taipei. Thanks to the two Year 2 Hong Kong students who helped him purchase daily necessities, Sam settled down soon after he had arrived his dormitory. Sam is now sharing the room with 1 Hong Kong students, 2 Malaysian students and 2 local students.
Day 2
The next task for Sam was to think about how to earn a living in Taipei. Overseas students are allowed to work part time in Taiwan. As Sam is an experienced guitar tutor in Hong Kong, he has decided to earn his living through teaching guitar classes. So the first thing for him was to buy a professional guitar and start his teaching and performance again. After buying a suitable guitar and talking to the shop owners and sharing guitar lovers’ news, holding his brand new handcrafted guitar, he even planned to join a national competition next year.
Day 3
Sam and Mr. Siu went to the National Taipei University of the Arts in Tamsui district. It is one of the best arts school in Taiwan which offers courses in Fine Arts, Drama, Music and Cultural Management. It was indeed a great experience for Sam to plan ahead his future paths after his graduation. After our visit to the Fine Arts department and reading the brochure, Sam had a new target: To study in the graduate school there.
Career and life planning does not end after graduation. We educate students to be stars, make informed choices, and achieve their goals with courage. The aim of this trip was not about helping one student to start his new life in a new place, but also about planting a seed in a new place for our future stars – Sam has already promised to be our LTPSS ambassador in Taiwan to help future students who are interested to study in Taiwan for the growth of our LTPSS community in the years ahead.
