It is a well-established tradition that in October LTPSS will celebrate the Spanish Week. Last Friday 12th of October, coinciding with the 526th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus to America, the Spanish Department put together a number of activities, both in class and beyond.
Students had an opportunity to reflect on that event, what it means to live in a global world and the richness of cultural diversity: Therefore the school hall was decorated with murals designed by students using a comic style to illustrate the discovery of America, also featuring the 21 Spanish-speaking countries.
On Friday afternoon, our school adopts a Hispanic culture in taste, colours, and sounds and transforms the school into a wonderful Spanish-speaking venue. A series of activities with special guests take place, featuring:
-
Hispanic food: our Spanish ambassadors (Tammy Mok, Tommy Mok, Kevin Zhang, Jenny Badger, Yzan Saavedra, Bilal Zafar, Buta Singh, Julia Camil, and Yasvhi Avasti) helped to prepare and serve Spanish snacks at the “Fiesta”. This year the signature dish was delicious Mexican guacamole, with the usual classics Manchego cheese and quince, and the Iberico cold cuts.
-
Musical performance: One of the highlights of Spanish Day is always the visit of the “Azúcar Latina”, our friends from Colombia, Cuba, Perú, Republica Dominicana and Mexico. Their performance of Latin American music hits like “Guantanamera” or “Despacito” invited the audience to dance to the Latin rhythms.
-
Clown show: Magnificently led by our new friend from Argentina, circus master Mr. Claudio Milas, accompanied with young twin stars, we enjoyed a unique circus show with live music!
-
Mexican Piñata: this year our Piñata was shaped in the form of a colourful Spanish guitar, which was inspired by the recent animated movie Coco. Some of our bravest students had the chance to hit and its candy explosion made everyone happy!
-
Salsa and bachata dance performance: our Spanish teachers Mr. Eduardo Arriaga and Ms. Vanessa Afonso demonstrated their passion for Latin style dance during the concert.
We thank all the participants and guests, including students from two international schools, ICHK and SCIE visited us to enjoy the good vibes of our school.
